Having a water heater
installed is one of the most important tasks in the American
household, especially in places where people have to fend off
extremely cold weather from time to time. However, you should know
that just because you had a heater
set up, it doesn’t mean that it will keep working flawlessly for
you even without proper cleaning and maintenance.
Eventually, you might
notice that your hot water seems to be decreasing in temperature, or
you might hear some strange noises from your furnace itself. In this
case, you already have a problem that might need the services of
reliable plumbing professionals. In either case, here are some
maintenance tips that you should consider doing every now and then:
Lowering the
Temperature
You might want to
consider lowering the temperature of your heater to at least 120 or
less – this way you can save up on power and keep your unit from
wearing down rapidly. For a gas heater, simply turn down the heating
dial. For electric units on the other hand, find the heating elements
located outside the water heater and turn it down.
Drain and Flush
Drain your tank at
least once a year to keep sediments from hardening inside the
reservoir. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve and open the valve
to remove the water. Make sure that you’ve turned off the power
before operating on your tank.
